What standard do I have to be to join the orchestra?

You could be a school leaver who played an instrument at school and want to continue performing; or maybe you played a musical instrument when you were younger, and have started to play again. You may be a member of an "adult starters" orchestra who feels ready to move to the next level. Or perhaps you teach a musical instrument and want to enjoy playing in a large orchestra.

We welcome new members who play strings, woodwind, brass or percussion. The general standard of our players is at least AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) grade 6 or above.

If you're not sure whether our orchestra would be right for you, come along to a rehearsal or two and try it out.

Do I need to audition?

Brisbane Concert Orchestra does not hold formal auditions. Instead, we like potential members to come along to a rehearsal or two and play with the orchestra.

How do I join the orchestra?

If you'd like more information on joining the orchestra or attending a rehearsal, please email your name, contact information and details about the instrument/s you play to inquiries@bco.org.au

Alternatively, you can contact one of the following orchestra members:

  • Strings - Greg Seeto - 0407 377 795
  • Woodwind - Linda Buckham - 0412 479 441
  • Brass & Percussion - Bernie Hoesman - 07 3366 2619

Where and when does the orchestra rehearse?

We rehearse at the beautiful concert hall of the All Hallows' School (547 Ann St, Fortitude Valley) from 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM on Tuesday night. We follow the school calendar, and so don't rehearse during school holidays. Parking is usually available through the gate at the end of Dodge Lane.

Occasionally we hold special tutorials for individual sections and these may be just prior to rehearsals or they may be at other times/venues but they are always planned with plenty of notice.

We encourage attendance at all rehearsals and performances but we also appreciate that from time to time, work and family issues pop up that prevent you from keeping these commitments. Try to take contact details from a couple of people in your section or a committee member so that you can let someone know if you are going to miss a rehearsal or a performance.

What are the membership fees?

Our fee is $100 per calendar year (approximately $2.50/rehearsal over the entire year). Full-time students pay only $25 per calendar year.

The fee can be paid in two instalments if that arrangement suits you better. Genuine financial needs that can't be overcome by making two separate payments can be discussed discreetly with a member of the committee so we can come to an arrangement that suits everyone.

These fees help to cover basic running costs of the orchestra such as rental on the rehearsal hall, remuneration for the musical director and to enable us to raise funds to purchase new music. Most importantly, as a financial member of the orchestra you are covered in accordance with our public liability insurance policy when we perform in public venues.

What is the orchestra's uniform?

The orchestra's uniform varies depending on the flavour of the performance we are doing but it's important that you know we don't require anything out of the ordinary.

For the men we would like black pants, socks and shoes, and a long-sleeved black collared shirt.

For the women we request black bottoms (either skirt or pants depending on your preference) and a black collared blouse/shirt, but it doesn't have to be long-sleeved. If you would like to add a touch of colour to your outfit then please keep the adornment to a minimum and we suggest something like a solid-colour scarf.

Notice to BCO members
Parking space for BCO

Just a reminder that parking arrangements at All Hallows' School have changed. Both the Ann Street and Story Bridge entrance gates will be closed from 6 PM. We need to park in the parking area below the pool.
Go along Ann Street past the school and Antrim Street (it is one way) and then turn left into Boundary Street. Just a little way along, on the left, there is the entrance to Dodge Lane. At the end of Dodge Lane (do not turn left to Antrim Street), turn right into the school gate. You will find the parking area there.
